Half of Spyre functions as a rigorous text family, featuring strong serifs, rational cap widths, and a high x-height. On the other hand, Spyre Epoch challenges these contemporary ideas with higher contrast, pointed and splayed serifs, traditional cap widths, and a lower x-height.

Spyre is a neo-classical serif typeface that traces the evolution of Roman forms into a modern transitional style. Comprising two distinct families—Spyre and Spyre Epoch—it initiates a dialogue between the minimalist approach of the renowned Crystal Goblet concept and intricate detailing reminiscent of ancient engravings. The Spyre family embodies a robust text style, characterised by sturdy serifs, balanced cap widths, and a generous x-height. Unconventionally, Spyre Epoch challenges modern norms with heightened contrast, pointed and splayed serifs, traditional cap widths, and a lower x-height. Spyre’s genesis can be traced back to the type design program at Kingston School of Art (UK). Initially conceived as a revival of Trajan’s Inscription, Spyre embarked on a design journey exploring lowercase forms. Drawing inspiration from Oldstyle references, it gradually incorporated transitional elements reminiscent of typefaces such as Times New Roman and Plantin. In today’s digital world, Spyre offers a modern take on classical typography. By complementing both digital and analogue mediums, the Spyre family combines elegance and impact with forward-thinking design principles, bridging the gap between the past and the future.
