BRITISH STANDARD TYPE was commissioned by Turner Prize-winning artist ELIZABETH PRICE to create multiple custom display typefaces for SLOW DANS, her most ambitious work to date. This trilogy of multi-channel video works combines archival footage, graphics, speech, and sound to explore social and sexual histories through a digital lens. The typefaces were crafted to merge organic and digital languages, becoming central assets within the large-scale projection artworks.
Working closely with the artist, BRITISH STANDARD TYPE developed multiple hybrid-pixel typefaces, drawing inspiration from the large screens used in the artworks to guide the construction of the letterforms. A pixel-blending process was employed to create a unique hybrid digital language. The headline version of the typeface includes three sets of alternates with varying degrees of pixel degradation, shifting in harmony with the evolving moods of the artworks. To complete the family, a lowercase, proportionally spaced version was designed for extended reading.
SLOW DANS is a collaboration between Artangel, Film and Video Umbrella, Nottingham Contemporary, the Whitworth, University of Manchester, and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. The typefaces are used across the trilogy of video works, exhibition signage, unique artworks, and the accompanying monograph. The SLOW DANS trilogy has been displayed internationally, earning 5-star reviews in the press.
