Exploring the creative potential of new type technologies

NATAAL is a new global media brand that showcases inspiring fashion, music, visual arts and culture shaping global African creativity today. NATAAL approached BRITISH STANDARD TYPE to create a bespoke typeface for use across its publishing platforms and biannual magazine.

BRITISH STANDARD TYPE were commissioned to produce a headline typeface that celebrated African culture and supply a highly-recognisable typeface that would stand them apart from other publishers. Working closely with the design team creating the first issue of NATAAL magazine a humanist sans serif with unusual reverse contrast and bold graphic stylistic alternates was created. The stylistic alternates can be employed to create an unusual rhythm and endless combinations for editorial layouts.

NATAAL successfully entered the publishing space with global distribution and gained a rapid following. The typeface is successfully deployed across the breadth of NATAAL’s platforms to become a distinguishing feature of its unique cultural identity.
