EXTRALESS is a contemporary clothing brand with a philosophy of eliminating excess, focusing on quality, fundamentals, and shared humanity. Based in Japan, EXTRALESS embodies the ethos of “less is more” across its products, communications, and cultural contributions. BRITISH STANDARD TYPE, in collaboration with design studio OK-RM designed a custom typeface for the brand’s visual identity.
The typeface is conceived as a flexible tool, conceptually balancing three core principles: standardisation, ensuring clarity and consistency; modernist pragmatism, emphasising functional elegance; and technological innovation, utilising variable font technology to adapt seamlessly to different formats and materials.
Visually, the typeface merges geometric precision with contrasting humanist forms, combining low contrast, clean shapes, and micro detailing to establish a unique typographic vernacular. This synthesis reflects EXTRALESS’s ascetic yet utilitarian ethos, creating a cohesive and progressive typographic language that amplifies the brand’s mission to redefine corporate values through cultural contributions.
